讲座主题:Management Innovation & Design
------------------------------
In order to continue its impressive economic growth into the next two decades, China's national leadership has recognized that besides cost-effective manufacturing capability, its private and SOEs will have to increasing rely on innovation to come up with new products, services and business models that are globally competitive. Increase in entrepreneurial activity over the last few years is a great start and is necessary but not sufficient for innovation-driven economic growth to sustain over time. Besides entrepreneurial startups, the large private and State-Owned-Enterprises (SOE) will have to dramatically innovate as well. Over the last three decades, China's business environment has been structured for operational efficiency to be the low-cost factory to the world. What strategies can help Chinese firms transform into provider of high-value innovative products and services to the world? We will explore questions such as:

- How do large enterprises innovate? We will look at examples of P&G and other large US enterprises.
- What are the leadership challenges for management innovation and how can these be overcome?
- What are some of the unique characteristic of Chinese enterprises (Party, unions, hierarchical system etc.)?
- How can management as designing approach help us address some of these unique characteristics and challenges of management innovation of Chinese enterprises?
- What are some of the design best practices that can help Chinese enterprise advance their innovation journey within the context of its culture and environment?
- What makes design attitude and design practices even more suitable for Chinese enterprises than to their western counterparts?

We will present why executive and managers of 21st century need both decision and design attitude. Decision attitude excels when situation are clearly defined and stable and have indeed played an important role during the industrial and manufacturing era. But when these conditions does not hold, as in the case of innovation driven knowledge economy, then design attitude is needed. A world-renowned design scholar, Richard Boland (also my co-author on an upcoming book) has said, "manager are designers as well as decision makers and that although both are closely linked in management action, we have for too long emphasized the decision face of management over the design face." Many decades ago, Herbert Simon, father of modern management science made this distinct clear: "Everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones ... nature of sciences are concerned with how things are ... design, on the other hand is concerned with how things ought to be." Which is precisely the challenge of management innovation.
